High Commissioner Prasanna Gamage attended the 35th anniversary celebrations of the Wellington Sri Lanka School

High Commissioner Prasanna Gamage attended the 35th anniversary celebrations of the Wellington Sri Lanka School as the chief guest recently. He took part in the felicitations of the founding members of the school and the teachers who laid the foundation for the school, and dedicated their time and resources voluntarily to teaching the Sinhala Language and Buddhism to expatriate children. He also gave away prizes to the high-achieving children of the school.

High Commissioner Gamage, in his remarks, acknowledged and commended the efforts of the management committee, principal, teachers, and other volunteers who have been involved over the years in conducting the school. He also spoke of the importance of learning and preserving the mother tongue, UNESCO's declaration of International Mother Language Day in 1999, which falls on 21 February every year since 2000, and the importance of implementing coherent language policies in multiethnic societies.
