High Commissioner Prasanna Gamage met with Ms. Vanushi Sitanjali Walters, Member of Parliament of New Zealand at the Parliament of New Zealand.

High Commissioner Prasanna Gamage met with Ms. Vanushi Sitanjali Walters, Member of Parliament of New Zealand at the Parliament of New Zealand. Ms. Walters represents the New Zealand Labour Party. High Commissioner Gamage and Ms. Walters discussed potential areas of cooperation between the parliaments of Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Ms. Walters recalled her productive interactions she had with the Sri Lankan Women Parliamentarians who visited New Zealand Parliament in August 2023 and expressed her confidence that similar activities would further strengthen future cooperation. High Commissioner Gamage briefed Ms. Walters on the recent political, economic, international relations etc.

Ms. Walters, who is an alumnus of the universities of Auckland and Oxford was first elected to the New Zealand Parliament in 2020. She was the first Sri Lankan origin Member of Parliament of New Zealand. She currently functions as the shadow Attorney General and Spokesperson for Associate Foreign Affairs. Ms. Walters' is hailing from a very distinguished political family of Sri Lanka. Her great grandfather, the late Dr. Sir Ratanasothy Sarawanamuttu was a member of the State Council of Ceylon and also the first Ceylonese Mayor of Colombo. Her great grandmother, the late Lady Naysum Sarawanamuttu was Ceylon's second female Member of Parliament (State Council).
